Hours later I needed to piss and get something to eat. My stomach was growling loudly, causing discomfort in my side. Yara hadn’t said another word to me during the drive. I glanced in the mirror a few times to check on her but her head was buried in the seat. She was being dramatic but I welcomed the silence until it became overbearing.

I knew she was hungry and probably had to pee but her pride wouldn’t allow her to answer. With an upcoming food court and gas station, I switched lanes to exit. Cracker Barrel caught my eyes on the overhead sign. Yara didn’t pop her head up until I came to a complete stop. She looked out the window with a bewildered look and then back at me.

“You hungry? I’ll go get you some food and see if they have some hoodies or something that you can change into.” I had forgotten all about the hospital gown she wore over her dingy sweatpants. I was optimistic one of the souvenir shops had something she could throw on.

Everything read New Mexico in big flashy letters. I grabbed a gray hooded sweatshirt and a pair of matching sweats. “This will do,” I mumbled to myself, passing the items to the cashier. He looked at me with a raised brow and then back at the women’s clothing. Nosey muthafuckas like him were the reason I hated moving around without a plan. “Problem?”

“Oh, no, nothing,” he stammered over his words. “You can pay here.” He pointed to the debit card machine. I pulled out my wallet, taking out cash. I wasn’t stupid enough to leave a trail. I already was driving a rental that I had to put in my name. Too much of a paper trail wasn’t good. He took the cash before giving me my change. I walked out to the car, opening up the back door and stuck my hand in.

“Get dressed.”

“Okay.” I stood outside the car, smoking a cigar while Yara changed clothing. Not sure what my plan was now, I contemplated how I was going to drive the long drive to New York. Since I had to take the rental with me, I called to see if I could return it in a different state. The last thing I needed was the police on me for a stolen car.

Yara still wasn’t out of the woods as of yet and I didn’t need her risking everything by telling the police. Still standing outside in the heat, my phone rang with a call from Marcelo.

“Where are you? We have business to handle tonight. I’ve been calling you for hours.”

“I’m not in the states. I won’t be attending any meetings tonight or for about a week.”

“A week? Are you stupid? That is not how shit works Cion. Do I need to have you removed from the team?” Marcelo always threw around how he could do this or do that. Every time he tossed his authority around I grew more resentment toward my father.
